Second Career
What Is Second Career?
Second Career was launched in 2008 by the Ontario Ministry of Training, Colleges and Universities (MTCU) to help laid-off and unemployed Ontarians train for brand new careers. The program has helped thousands of Ontarians get the financial aid they need to train themselves in fields where skilled workers are needed in order to better ensure steady, reliable employment in the future. Studies have shown that over 70% of Second Career graduates find work in the industry they’ve trained for, with more than half of those finding employment within 3 months of graduation.
Second Career provides laid-off employees with:
- skills training to help them find jobs in high-demand occupations in Ontario
- financial support
The Second Career program aims to prepare you for a new career in areas where there is a demonstrable need for skilled workers. You can apply for financial assistance through Second Career if you are currently laid off from an employer. The training and courses must lead to a certificate or diploma and be completed within 24 months. The International Academy of Massage Therapy diploma program is designed to be completed within 19 months, which leaves additional time to become registered to work in the Province as a registered massage therapist.
What Can Second Career Do For Me?
Second Career provides up to $28,000 for:
- tuition
- books
- other instruction costs such as manuals or workbooks
- transportation
- a basic living allowance
Second Career is a cost-sharing grant provided on the basis of need, so you may be asked to contribute what you can to your training or education.
Your contribution to retraining will depend on your financial situation and cost of training.
Second Career takes into consideration the cost for:
- tuition
- accommodation
- living away from home allowance (if applicable)
- food
- phone, internet charges
- course and incremental costs (e.g. ancillary fees, books, etc.)
- heat and hydro
- transportation
- dependent care
- disability supports (if applicable)
Your actual contribution to retraining will be determined by the ministry. There are limits to the amount the ministry will provide for dependent care, accommodation and other factors, such as tuition.
Several factors are considered when figuring out who will receive funding.
- Active job search
- Length of unemployment
- Education background
- Work history
- Labour market prospects
- Training request
- Experience and occupational skills
The 2nd career tuition amount is limited to $10,000. How do I fund the balance?

It Sounds Great — But Am I Eligible?
As a potential applicant, after you have determined if you would like to apply to the massage therapy program, you would meet with an Employment Ontario Counselor to determine if you and your program of choice meet the second career’s criteria.
